Listen Now Smile FM: YES COO on Youth4Tourism Initiative

By Admin
June 26, 2023

Youth Employment Service (YES) COO Leanne Emery Hunter recently discussed the transformative Youth4Tourism initiative on Smile FM, highlighting a new chapter in South African tourism. The initiative aims to address youth unemployment while revitalising the tourism sector.

YES, established in 2018, is a business-led collaboration with government and labor to tackle South Africa's youth unemployment crisis. The organisation works to create quality work experiences for youth aged 18-35, partnering with over 1,800 corporate entities to provide year-long job opportunities.

The Youth4Tourism initiative specifically targets the tourism sector, which was severely impacted by COVID-19 but shows strong recovery potential. The program connects young South Africans with opportunities across hospitality, tour operations, and cultural tourism. Participants receive specialised training, mentorship, and practical work experience.

Hunter emphasised the initiative's dual impact: providing sustainable employment for youth while contributing to tourism innovation. The program focuses on developing digital skills, sustainable tourism practices, and cultural preservation. Participating youth help create new tourist experiences that showcase South Africa's diverse heritage and natural attractions.

Since its inception, YES has created over 100,000 work opportunities across various sectors. The Youth4Tourism initiative builds on this success, aiming to place thousands of youth in tourism-related positions over the next few years. This strategic focus on tourism aligns with South Africa's economic recovery plans and the growing global demand for authentic travel experiences.

This collaboration between YES, tourism stakeholders, and government entities represents a coordinated effort to address unemployment while positioning South Africa as a premier tourist destination. The initiative particularly emphasises developing tourism opportunities in previously underserved communities, creating economic benefits beyond traditional tourist hubs.
