In a powerful testament to collaborative impact and purpose-driven partnerships, the EYWA (Employability for Youth and Women in South Africa) Programme recently celebrated the graduation of its newest cohort of young women entrepreneurs at an inspiring ceremony in Johannesburg. Spearheaded by the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), and co-financed by the European Union, Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Lulalab, and YES4Youth, the event marked a major milestone in advancing youth and women entrepreneurship in South Africa.
This flagship initiative aligns seamlessly with South Africa’s national goals of economic recovery, particularly in tackling the high unemployment rates among women and youth. It reflects the broader vision laid out by the President—to create inclusive platforms that cultivate job creators, not just job seekers.
A Journey of Growth and Purpose
The EYWA Programme was designed to equip participants with practical entrepreneurial skills, business acumen, and access to mentorship networks that would enable them to build, scale, and sustain thriving businesses. After months of intensive training, real-world workshops, and mentorship, the graduates stood proudly to receive their certificates—a symbol of their commitment, resilience, and the promising futures ahead.
“Through partnerships like these, we are bridging gaps and creating opportunities for the next generation of business leaders,” said JCCI CEO Bernardette Zeiler during her welcoming address. She further emphasized the value of Public-Private Partnerships in delivering sustainable solutions to unemployment. “This programme concentrates first on equipping young women with foundational business knowledge, then supports them through to sub-grants and opportunities to scale. The next phase will see many of them enter our export readiness programmes.”
An Evening of Celebration and Empowerment
The event was graced by influential figures and stakeholders who have been pivotal in bringing the EYWA Programme to life. From keynote speeches to powerful testimonies, the atmosphere radiated hope, possibility, and purpose.
Carmen Ayllon from the Spanish Chamber expressed pride in the programme’s impact, reaffirming the Chamber’s commitment to developing youth and women in underserved communities. “This initiative is not only about entrepreneurship,” she said, “but about empowerment, financial inclusion, and bridging the gap between education and the demands of the private sector.”
A special highlight was the motivational address by Phike, a globally acclaimed entrepreneur whose journey from humble beginnings to global recognition resonated deeply with the graduates.
Graduates themselves stole the spotlight as they shared their stories of growth, the development of their businesses, and how EYWA gave them the tools and confidence to thrive.
Beyond the Graduation: A New Chapter Begins
Graduating from the EYWA Programme is only the beginning. These young entrepreneurs now become part of a growing alumni network, continuing to benefit from ongoing mentorship, funding opportunities, and access to local and international markets through the JCCI’s various programmes.
Thanks to contributions from partners like Lulalab and YES4Youth, the programme has expanded its reach and impact, offering scalable support and real-time business solutions to deserving SMMEs.
“This is a flagship programme,” said Zeiler, “because it speaks to the heart of our economic environment—addressing youth unemployment and building resilient, empowered communities.”
A Blueprint for Transformation
The success of the EYWA Programme is more than just a celebratory milestone—it is a beacon of what is possible when stakeholders come together with a shared vision for impact. It embodies the true spirit of empowerment, laying the foundation for a new generation of female entrepreneurs who will not only transform their own lives, but the economic landscape of South Africa.
As these graduates continue their entrepreneurial journeys, they carry with them more than just skills—they carry hope, drive, and a determination to create change. EMPOWERED SA Magazine salutes them and the visionaries behind EYWA who made it all possible.
