In a country where diversity is the cornerstone of its identity, South Africa’s organisations face a dual imperative: to honour the legacy of a complex past while building a future rooted in inclusivity. Nowhere is this challenge more critical than in institutions shaping tomorrow’s leaders. For 25 years, GIBS has been at the forefront of this endeavour, embedding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) into its DNA.
As GIBS celebrates its quarter-century milestone in 2025, its ongoing efforts to foster inclusive excellence stand as a testament to its role as more than just a business school. It is a catalyst for societal transformation. From bold recruitment strategies and inclusive teaching methodologies to pioneering policies that tackle systemic inequalities, GIBS is setting benchmarks in how South African institutions can drive meaningful change.
25 years, one vision: Embracing diversity as a strategic imperative
Since its founding in 2000, GIBS has recognised that diversity is not a checkbox exercise but a strategic priority. As South Africa emerged from the shadow of apartheid, businesses and educational institutions were tasked with addressing entrenched disparities. For GIBS, this wasn’t just about compliance with the Employment Equity Act of 1998; it was about fostering a sense of belonging that transcends legislation.
Kate Robertson, head of human capital development partnering at GIBS, explains: “Diversity has been intrinsic to our identity from the very beginning. As we mark 25 years, we reflect on how far we’ve come, but more importantly, we focus on the work still to be done. For us, inclusivity is a commitment to ensuring every voice is heard and valued, and that commitment shapes everything we do.”
Moving beyond numbers: A holistic approach to DEIB
GIBS’ level 1 broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) rating is a proud achievement, but the school views it as only one facet of its transformation journey. While meeting employment equity targets is critical, GIBS understands that true inclusivity requires cultural transformation, which starts at the executive level.
This philosophy underpins initiatives such as the Voice of GIBS (VoG), a platform where staff actively contribute to decision-making processes. Through forums and workshops, VoG has become a space for dialogue, enabling the institution to remain attuned to the diverse needs of its community.
The role of faculty in driving transformation
Dr. Dots Ndletyana, senior lecturer at GIBS, recalls the early days when the faculty was overwhelmingly homogenous. Today, nearly 40% of the faculty comprises Black academics, many with doctoral qualifications — a significant milestone for an institution in the competitive landscape of global academia.
“When I joined GIBS, diversity among the faculty was minimal. Today, our faculty not only reflects South Africa’s demographics but also brings an incredible richness of perspectives to the classroom,” Ndletyana says.
Recruitment strategies have been deliberate, focusing on identifying and nurturing talent from underrepresented groups. This has allowed GIBS to distinguish itself in an environment where the global competition for skilled academics remains intense.
Breaking barriers for students
The challenges of access to education remain stark, with socio-economic inequalities still limiting opportunities for many. GIBS has responded by adopting innovative policies, such as its recognition of prior learning (RPL) framework. This programme enables students with non-traditional educational backgrounds to gain entry into GIBS, levelling the playing field for those who have faced systemic barriers.
Scholarships, particularly for women and underrepresented groups, have been another critical avenue for transformation. By reducing financial barriers, GIBS ensures that its classrooms mirror the diversity of South Africa’s workforce.
GIBS and the Youth Employment Service (YES)
A standout initiative in GIBS’ arsenal is its participation in the Youth Employment Service (YES) programme. Through YES, unemployed graduates gain invaluable work experience while contributing to GIBS’ operations. The programme not only enhances participants’ skills but also integrates fresh perspectives into the institution. Many YES graduates eventually join GIBS’ workforce, highlighting the programme’s role as a pipeline for diverse talent.
A classroom that mirrors the world
One of GIBS’ most profound achievements has been creating a teaching and learning environment that reflects the diversity of the world in which its students will lead. In the classroom, students are encouraged to tackle real-world challenges head-on.
“When students encounter tensions — be they racial, gendered, or cultural — we guide them to resolve these issues collaboratively, just as they would in a corporate setting,” Ndletyana explains.
By fostering a culture of open dialogue and critical thinking, GIBS equips students with the tools to navigate complex multicultural work environments.
Elevating women in business and academia
Female representation is a cornerstone of GIBS’ DEIB strategy, with initiatives such as the GIBS Women Faculty Network (GWFN) launched to support women academics through mentorship and professional development.
Kate Robertson highlights the strides GIBS has made: “At employee level, we have 65% female representation, and this extends to 64% at senior and top management levels. But numbers are just the beginning. It’s about creating an environment where women feel empowered to lead and innovate.”
Programs such as the Leading Women Programme further underscore GIBS’ commitment to fostering female leadership in business. Scholarships and mentorship initiatives ensure that women, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have the resources and support to thrive.
Ensuring well-being: Support and accommodation for night shift staff
An often-overlooked pillar of GIBS’ operational success is its dedicated support staff, who work tirelessly to ensure the smooth functioning of the campus, even during night shifts. From security personnel safeguarding the premises to housekeeping teams maintaining a welcoming environment, their contribution is indispensable. For those on night shifts, GIBS provides thoughtfully arranged on-site lodging facilities, offering a secure and comfortable space to rest when needed. These accommodations underscore GIBS’ commitment to the well-being of every team member who ensures the institution operates seamlessly, day and night.
Celebrating 25 years of DEIB innovation
As GIBS reaches its 25th anniversary, the institution is not just reflecting on its past achievements but also charting a course for the future. The anniversary theme — “Celebrating 25 years of leadership and transformation” — captures GIBS’ commitment to advancing DEIB as a cornerstone of its legacy.
The quarter-century celebration will serve not only as a look back but as a springboard for further innovation.
DEIB as a driver of innovation
GIBS understands that inclusivity is a catalyst for innovation. By creating a culture where diverse viewpoints are celebrated, the institution has unlocked new ways of thinking and problem-solving.
“Diversity enhances not just individual learning but organisational effectiveness. It drives creativity, improves decision-making, and ultimately, prepares our students to succeed in an interconnected world,” Robertson says.
The road ahead: A legacy of leadership
Looking to the next 25 years, GIBS is committed to deepening its focus on DEIB. Initiatives in the pipeline include expanded scholarship programmes, partnerships with historically disadvantaged schools, and a greater emphasis on African-centred business research.
Dr. Ndletyana sums up the institution’s vision: “Our mission is not just to teach business skills but to shape leaders who can make a meaningful difference. As we celebrate 25 years, we remain steadfast in our commitment to diversity, inclusivity, equity, and belonging — because that’s what the future demands.”
By embedding DEIB into every facet of its operations, GIBS is not just celebrating a milestone but setting the stage for the next chapter of its journey — a journey where diversity is not just an ideal but a lived reality. Here’s to the next 25 years!
