The collaboration focuses on training and certification pathways for young people as demand for AI and digital capabilities grows across the labour market.

Microsoft South Africa, the local arm of the global technology company Microsoft, and the Youth Employment Service (YES), a South African private-sector initiative focused on work-readiness programmes for unemployed youth, are scaling a joint training effort aimed at building digital and artificial intelligence skills among young people entering the labour market.

The initiative operates through structured learning pathways that introduce participants to digital concepts and AI-related tools, progressing from foundational exposure to more advanced competencies. The programme is designed around employability outcomes, linking training content to skills that can be applied in entry-level digital roles and broader workplace environments.

The collaboration has expanded its reach over the past year, with more than 70,000 young participants engaging in learning modules and over 140,000 certification opportunities made available. The programme combines Microsoft-curated content with YES delivery mechanisms, with the aim of standardising access to digital training across different levels of prior experience.

The effort reflects wider labour market pressures in South Africa, where high youth unemployment continues to intersect with a growing demand for digital skills in sectors such as services, technology operations and business support functions. Training initiatives such as this are increasingly positioned as a bridge between education systems and entry-level employment opportunities in digitally enabled roles.

The programme recently received external recognition at the Sentech Africa Tech Week Awards in Cape Town, where it was awarded the Tech Impact Award. The recognition comes as governments and private sector organisations across the continent expand investment in workforce development tied to digital transformation and AI adoption.

Within the training model, participants are introduced to artificial intelligence concepts alongside broader digital literacy content. The structure is intended to allow progression through multiple stages of learning, with certification pathways designed to provide formal recognition of acquired skills.

“Through the YES × Microsoft AI Skills Initiative, we’re not only equipping 50,000 young South Africans with globally recognised digital skills and an industry recognised international certification, but we’re fundamentally reshaping access to opportunity in the digital economy.”

The statement reflects the programme’s focus on scale and certification as mechanisms to improve employability outcomes, particularly in entry-level roles where verified digital skills are increasingly required.

The partnership sits within broader efforts by Microsoft to expand skills development initiatives in South Africa, particularly in areas linked to cloud computing, digital services and AI. For YES, the collaboration extends its model of employer-linked youth employment programmes, which place participants into structured work and training environments intended to improve long-term job readiness.

As digital skills become more central to workforce requirements across industries, programmes such as this are being positioned as part of a wider shift toward structured pathways that connect training directly with employment opportunities, particularly for younger entrants to the labour market.
