Drakensberg, South Africa (10 September 2025) – Adventure seekers and eager trail runners came out to explore the iconic rugged terrain of Mont-Aux Sources, nestled at the foot of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, for an epic ultra-trail event organised by WILDTRUST over the weekend.
The premier trail-running event offered breathtaking mountain scenery, with both 55km and 20km routes launching from the Mahai Camp in the Royal Natal National Park – a crown jewel of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage site.
Beyond the spectacular trails, every entry contributed to funds for conservation, boosting the park’s eco-tourism operations and Bearded Vulture recovery programme.
“A huge shout-out to everyone who made the weekend possible. Our event team, volunteers and partners worked tirelessly to deliver a safe, well-run race; our sponsors supplied vital resources and equipment; and behind all of this are the passionate, dedicated community who make Monties happen at scale,” WILDTRUST said.
The organisation further acknowledged that the participants’ enthusiasm and belief in Mont-Aux Sources fuel its purpose.
“By coming to Mahai and sharing our courses, you help shine a spotlight on the park’s heritage and create meaningful local impact, create a platform and exposure for emerging trail runners, temporary jobs and income for local businesses and contractors, and support for youth development through the YES programme.”
The Upper uThukela Project is a significant example of conservation in action. Led by WILDTRUST and supported by the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, this initiative is focused on restoring vital grasslands and safeguarding strategic water sources. By working hand-in-hand with the local AmaZizi and AmaNgwane communities, the project helps to protect a massive 32,000 hectares of Drakensberg grassland.
