Western Cape Government, YES and SCORE sign agreement to create opportunities for youth sports coaches in the Western Cape.
As part of the Western Cape Government’s commitment to creating opportunities for youth, the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has partnered with YES (Youth Employment Service) to unlock employment opportunities and develop new models for economic activity.
On Friday, 23 May 2025, this partnership was formalised through the placement of 42 youth as sports coaches in collaboration with the NGO partner, SCORE—an organisation dedicated to using sport to change lives.
All 42 coaches are alumni of the YearBeyond National Youth Service Programme. Over the next year, they will serve as coaches specialising in specific sporting codes at local schools and SCORE hubs in Mbekweni, Franschhoek, and Malmesbury.
“We are excited to see the commitment between the Western Cape Government and YES taking shape and look forward to many more such agreements. We must do everything we can to offer the youth of our province the opportunities and skills they need and deserve to become active economic citizens,” said Premier Alan Winde.
“This is a great example of how the provincial government can collaborate with the private sector for mutual benefit,” added Tsholo Mogotsi, YES Chief Partnerships Officer. During their YES year, the coaches will also receive training in first aid and refereeing.
“We are eager to see this model expanded and replicated in other areas,” said Guy Redman, Head of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
The ceremonial signing concluded with SCORE, the onsite manager of the youth coaches, committing to link the participants with community and club activities—strengthening the sports ecosystem in the three focus areas.
